The statement said that although it had earlier been decided that fans could attend, the security situation facing the city, including several drones shot down over Erbil this morning, meant the match would be played without spectators solely to protect citizens' safety.

The Erbil operations room stressed that “the safety of fans and citizens is more precious than any financial or sporting gain”. While acknowledging that Erbil Club would suffer financially, it said protecting people's lives comes above everything else.

At the end of the statement, the operations room apologised to Erbil Club's loyal supporters and wished everyone safety.
