After seven years of construction, the United States opened its consulate, the largest building in the region. The US deputy secretary of state, who attended the ceremony, said Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are important to the United States and that opening the consulate is a step towards strengthening diplomatic relations.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said the opening marks the beginning of expanded coordination between the United States and the Kurdistan Region.

In addition to diplomatic and political work, the consulate includes accommodation for staff and diplomats. Personnel from seven US agencies and departments will work in the building.

The United States has more than 150 missions and consulates around the world, and the new Erbil consulate is its largest. It cost around 800 million dollars and is built on a 200,000-square-metre site.
